History
The first Sikhs arrived in Alabama during the 1970s and 1980s as skilled professionals — engineers, physicians, and academics — drawn by opportunities at the University of Alabama, UAB Medical Center, and Huntsville's NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Community gatherings initially took place in private homes before a dedicated Gurdwara was established in Birmingham in the late 1990s. The 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act opened the door to this educated professional wave.
