About Gurdwara Sahib
Stockton Gurdwara Sahib, the first Gurdwara in the United States, holds a significant place in Sikh history, established in 1912 by Sikh immigrants seeking a religious and social hub. Originally founded to serve the spiritual needs of Sikh immigrants, it also became a crucial resource for all South Asian immigrants in the early 20th century. The Gurdwara played a vital role in the Ghadar movement for homeland independence and provided scholarships for South Asian students at UC Berkeley, including Congressman Dalip Singh Saund. Today, Stockton Gurdwara Sahib offers a range of services including Akhand Paath, Sehaj Path, wedding ceremonies (Anand Karj), and funeral services. It continues its legacy of service through its langar hall, which provides free meals to all, irrespective of background. The Gurdwara also hosts various community activities such as Punjabi school, Gatka (Sikh martial arts) classes, Kirtan classes, and monthly health clinics. A unique feature is its annual Nagar Kirtan (Sikh Parade) held in April, drawing large crowds. Stockton Gurdwara Sahib remains a vibrant community center, fostering spiritual growth, education, and service to all.
