About Sikh Society of Michigan
Sterling Heights Gurdwara Sahib, also known as the Sikh Society of Michigan, holds the distinction of being the first Gurdwara Sahib established in Detroit. Its history began in 1979 with the acquisition and transformation of an old church building. In 2012, a new, purpose-built facility was inaugurated, serving as a central hub for the Sikh community. The Gurdwara offers a range of services and programs designed to foster spiritual growth and community engagement. Daily programs include Naam Simran (meditation on God's name) and Rehras Sahib (evening prayer). A significant weekly event is the Sunday Kirtan Diwan, featuring devotional singing by the Sangat (congregation) and Bhai Sahib (spiritual leader), followed by a community Langar (shared meal). The constitution for the Sikh Society of Michigan was signed and put into effect in 2003, further formalizing community governance. Beyond religious services, the Gurdwara plays a vital community role, embodying the Sikh principles of Kirat Karo (honest living), Vand Chakko (sharing and consuming together), and Naam Japo (meditation on God). These pillars guide the community's commitment to selfless service and fostering an inclusive environment. A unique feature is its continuous operation seven days a week, with hours from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM, ensuring accessibility for devotees. Educational resources on Sikhism are also made available through additional links on their website.
