About Gurdwara Millwoods

Gurdwara Millwoods, established as a cornerstone of the Sikh community in Edmonton, traces its origins to the early 1960s when Sikh immigrants began settling in the city. The formal foundation of the Ramgarhia Gursikh Society of Edmonton was laid on November 6, 1982, leading to the commencement of construction for Gurdwara Millwoods on April 14, 1985. This institution serves as a vital center for worship, education, and community engagement, embodying the core Sikh principles of meditation, honest living, and sharing. The Gurdwara offers a range of services, including educational programs through the Ramgarhia Khalsa School, which teaches Punjabi language, Gurmukhi script, Sikh history, and values to children. Musical education is also provided through Harmonium and Tabla classes. A significant community resource is the Bhai Gurdas Library, established in 1987, housing thousands of Sikh-related books. A unique feature is the Gurdwara's extensive archive of audio recordings, featuring kirtan, katha, and dhadi vaaran from various esteemed performers. Gurdwara Millwoods plays a crucial role in fostering community connections, not only within the Sikh population but also with the broader Edmonton and Alberta community through active involvement with local organizations and interfaith groups. It hosts daily programs, including three scheduled Divans, and numerous private programs for its members. All are welcome to experience the peace and serenity of the Gurdwara, which upholds strict etiquette to maintain its sanctity. The Gurdwara is also known for its Langar, a free community kitchen serving lacto-vegetarian meals to all, reinforcing the principle of equality.

History

In the early 1960s, Sikhs came to settle in the city of Edmonton, and slowly the community started to grow. In the 1970s, small congregations were held among the local Sikhs, but these took place in rented buildings or personal properties. On November 5, 1982, the Ramgarhia Gursikh Society of Edmonton was created and the foundation for Gurdwara Millwoods would be laid soon after. Construction began at 2606 Mill Woods Road East (Edmonton), laying the foundations of Gurdwara Millwoods, managed by an Executive Committee as elected by members of the RGSE. In 1986, the first Divan program was held, and classes were started to teach children the Punjabi language and Gurmukhi script. A few years later, a library was established to help connect diaspora Sikhs with Sikh literature and history. In 1995, Kirtan Classes were started, and the Ramgarhia Cultural Association was created to conserve the Ramgarhia heritage and create social programming. By 1995, it was clear larger facilities would be needed to support the growing Sikh community. Construction of the first extension was completed in 2006 with additional extensions completed in 2010.

Unique Features

Ramgarhia Khalsa School has grown from 12 students to 389 students. Bhai Gurdas Library has more than five thousand Sikh-based Gurbani, religious, history, cultural, and educational books. The Kirtan classes cover Harmonium and Tabla, with nearly 70 students. RGSE is a fundamental organization in developing ongoing relationships within the Sikh community and also the larger Edmonton and Alberta community. The Society works closely with local organizations, non-profits, public servants, elected officials, interfaith groups, and more to ensure the involvement of the Sikh perspective and support in larger society.
