About Gurdwara Nanak Niwas
Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, part of the India Cultural Centre of Canada, was established in 1984 and serves as a significant spiritual and cultural hub for the Sikh community in the Greater Vancouver area. Located on Richmond's "Highway to Heaven," it upholds the principles of humanity and offers a wide array of Sikh religious services. The Gurdwara provides daily programs including Nitnem, Gurbani Kirtan, and Katha Veechar. Specialized services include Akhand Paath Sahib (48-hour continuous recitation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji) and Sehaj Paath Sahib (non-continuous recitation), suitable for various occasions. Anand Karaj, the Sikh wedding ceremony, and religious funeral services are also conducted. Gurdwara Nanak Niwas plays a vital role in the community, supporting initiatives like the Guru Nanak Food Bank and the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen. It also hosts senior meetings and supports local organizations and sports clubs. The Gurdwara features a Diwan Hall with a capacity for 1000 persons, where programs can be viewed on television in the Langar hall. A unique attraction is the Yadgar-E-Khalsa, installed on behalf of 37 gurdwara managing committees. The construction of the current building, costing approximately four million dollars, was completed in 1993.

The Gurdwara at 8600 No. 5 Road, Richmond, BC is Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, which is part of the India Cultural Centre of Canada. It was established in 1984 and serves as a significant spiritual and cultural hub for the Sikh community in the Greater Vancouver area. This Gurdwara is located on “Highway to Heaven”, a stretch of No. 5 Road in Richmond known for its many places of worship representing different religions. The construction of the new building started on 15 March 1993 and the Guru Ghar was opened to the congregation on 5 September 1993 after the Bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib. This magnificent building cost about four million dollars.
Unique Features
Yadgar-E-Khalsa’ installed on behalf of 37 gurdwara managing committees of B.C. and the USA is also gracefully present in the park of the gurdwara, which is a great centre of attraction for devotees and visitors. The Gurdwara Nanak Niwas Society was established in 1983. The India Cultural Centre of Canada was founded by Asa Singh Johal (1922–2021).
