About Midwest Sikh Gurudwara

Midwest Sikh Gurudwara, located in Lenexa, Kansas, has been a cornerstone of the Sikh community since the 1960s, evolving from a small group of five families meeting in homes to a thriving center for worship and community engagement. Officially established in its current Lenexa location in April 2022, after originating in Shawnee in 1989, the Gurudwara serves as a gateway to Sikhism, offering spiritual knowledge and wisdom to all, irrespective of age, sex, caste, or creed. The Gurudwara provides various religious services, including Paath (readings from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji) such as Akhand Path, Sahej Path, and Sukhmani Sahib Path. It also facilitates life events like Anand Karaj (Sikh weddings) and Antim Ardas ceremonies. A unique feature is the Langar, a community kitchen serving free vegetarian meals to all visitors, embodying the Sikh principle of equality and selfless service. The Gurudwara also hosts Inspirational Youth Classes, fostering spiritual and moral education for children. Beyond religious observances, Midwest Sikh Gurudwara plays a vital socio-economic role, offering shelter and care to those in need and serving as a platform for discussing community issues. The organization is currently undertaking a significant community initiative to build a new, larger Gurudwara facility to accommodate its growing congregation. Adherence to Sikh etiquette, including modest dress and head coverings, is encouraged for all visitors.

Langar

The term Langar literally means kitchen where food is prepared and served in a Gurdwara to all the visitors (without distinction of background) for free. Only vegetarian food is served, to ensure that all people, regardless of their dietary restrictions, can eat as equals. Langar is open to Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike. The institution of the Langar, or free kitchen, was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. It was designed to uphold the principle of equality among all people regardless of their religion, caste, color, creed, age, gender or social status – a revolutionary concept in the caste-ridden 16th- century India where Sikhism began. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness, and oneness of all humankind. As the Gurbani says, “…the Light of God is in all hearts.”

Inspirational Youth Class

A fun and educational class held at the Gurdwara, ranging from all Gurmat topics from the very basics to more in depth with presentations, stories, games, sweets and quizes to make it all the more fun and interactive .

Sukhmani Sahib Path

Sukhmani, titled Gauri Sukhmani in the Guru Granth Sahib after the musical measure Gauri to which it belongs, is a lengthy composition by Guru Arjan which many include in their daily regimen of prayers. The site, once enclosed by a dense wood, where it was composed around AD 1602-03, is still marked on the bank of the Ramsar pool in the city of Amritsar. The word sukhmani is rendered into English as “consoler of the mind.” The entire poem has been translated into English more than once under the commonly preferred title, “Psalm of Peace” or “Song of Peace,” signifying the soothing effect it has on the nynd of the reader. Sukh literally means peace or comfort and mani mind or heart. One of the fundamental texts of the Sikh faith, the Sukhmani presents a complete scheme of the teachings of the Sikh faith. While each astpadi has a fresh vision to impart, a particular aspect of Truth to unfold, the whole text may be regarded as the reiteration of basic themes such as Divine immanence, Divine compassion, abundance of grace, God’s succouring hand, the merit of devotion, of holy company and humility. With such reiteration, the composition as a whole has a remarkable gripping quality reinforced by the striking imagery which in stanza after stanza brings home to the seeker the truths he must own.

Sahej Path

Sahej Path is also reciation of Guru Granth Sahib, from beginning to end, but it doesn’t have to be continuous. A person or group of persons can read the holy text according to their schedule and complete the reading of Guru Granth Sahib.

Akhand Path

Akand Path (akhand = uninterrupted, without break; path = reading) is non-stop, continuous recital of the Guru Granth Sahib from beginning to end. Such a recital must be completed within 48 hours. The entire Holy Volume, 1430 large pages, is read through in a continuous ceremony. This reading must go on day and night, without a moment’s intermission. The relay of reciters who take turns at saying Scripture must ensure that no break occurs.

History

The Sikh community in Kansas City dates from the 1960s. The community was formed with only five families and originally met every Sunday in the homes of members. The community continued to operate out of private homes until 1978, when members began renting building space on Sundays in order to accommodate the expansion of their community. Finally, in 1989, the Kansas City Sikhs completed a Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) in Shawnee Kansas. In April 2022 the new Gurudwara was completed in Lenexa Kansas and the Sangat happily moved the Guru Granth Sahibs there.

Unique Features

The new Gurudwara project is planned to build at Lenexa Kansas and will cost approximately 6.8 million. We have a total property of 12 acres which will be used for New Gurudwara premises. The plan calls for a two-story building with 13, 0000 square feet on the lower floor and 11,000 square feet on the second floor. It is planned for 130 parking spaces but the 12-acre site has plenty of room to add more spaces as needed in the future.
