History

Rooted in the Sikh tradition and the universal teachings of its Gurus, Gobind Sadan, “God’s House Without Walls,” is an international interfaith community currently with centers in India, and in the U.S.which has grown out of Baba Virsa Singh ji’s vision for world peace. In the Delhi Gobind Sadan center, havan (sacred fire) goes on 24 hours a day, and the One God is worshipped in many forms at holy places of all religions that dot the large campus. Whenever the birthday of any prophet comes, it is celebrated with joy by all the residents, who include Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians from all social levels, living together as one human family. Although Babaji is no longer physically present, he is guiding and blessing all those who turn to him with love. His timely and timeless message is that the prophets of all religions come from the same divine Source, to remind people of the same eternal truths of dharma. He worked throughout his life to uplift the poor and to bring down the barriers between people of different religions. The emphasis is on inner spiritual growth rather than outer rituals. Baba Virsa Singh’s mission, he said, is to help everyone draw closer to God. The programme of Gobind Sadan is based on the teachings of Guru Nanak, the First Sikh Guru, and also on Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture encompassing inspired hymns not only of Sikh Gurus but also of Hindu and Muslim saints Guru Nanak taught a simple threefold path to God: Work hard to support yourself by honest means, from what you earn share with others, and always remember God. Guru Granth Sahib teaches us to live in the world, helping others, but to be inwardly detached from worldly things and attached only to God.
