About Ontario Khalsa Darbar

**Ontario Khalsa Darbar** Located at 7080 Dixie Road in Mississauga, Ontario, the Ontario Khalsa Darbar (OKD) stands as a significant Sikh Gurdwara Sahib, recognized as one of the largest in North America. Established in 1978, its journey began in a modest trailer, evolving through community support to acquire land and construct its present building by 1988. OKD's mission is to promote Sikhi as a universal religion by highlighting its core principles: Naam Japna (meditation on God), Kirat Karni (honest living), and Vand Chhakna (sharing with the less fortunate). The Gurdwara offers a range of spiritual and community services. These include Gurbani programs such as Akhand Path, Sehaj Path, and Anand Karaj ceremonies, as well as funeral services and a location for scattering ashes. The Gurmat Academy, managed by OKD, provides Punjabi language and music lessons. Beyond religious activities, OKD plays a vital role in community engagement through initiatives like blood donation drives and SIN camps. A unique feature is the live 24/7 broadcast of Gurbani Kirtan from Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. OKD aims to serve all of humanity, aspiring for the welfare of all.

History

The Ontario Khalsa Darbar Gurdwara Sahib, located on Dixie Road in Mississauga, was officially established in 1978. Through the support of the Sikh community, funds were increasingly gathered, leading to the acquisition of land and the construction of a building, which was completed in 1988. In 1973, the Sikh community embarked on a significant journey by acquiring around 1.9 acres of land, which featured a modest farmhouse, with the intention of founding a Gurudwara in Mississauga. Sangat commenced the construction of a Gurdwara at 7080 Dixie Road, situated within the farmhouse in 1978. Sangat has constructed a mobile structure intended for the Gurdwara in 1982. The foundation has been laid for a new building that will encompass an area of roughly 25,000 square feet on April 10, 1982. The inauguration of the newly constructed Gurdwara took place on June 25, 1989. The Sikh community has successfully obtained an additional 25 acres of land to develop a Gurdwara Sahib and provide parking facilities in 1993. Sangat has acquired an additional 11.5 acres of land for a total cost of $2.3 million in 1995. The groundwork for the expansion of the building encompasses approximately an additional 110,000 square feet on July 13, 1997. A Sikh flag known as the Nishan Sahib, towering at a height of 135 feet, has been installed in 1998. Sangat prepared the terrain by excavating numerous tons of sand in 2003. The New Kitchen has been constructed, and the East Hall Extension has been finalized with the support of the community in 2019. The construction of Kiratpur Park has been finalized, and it is now accessible for all communities to respectfully scatter the ashes of their deceased family members in 2022. The refurbishment of Halls 5, 6, 7, and 8 has been successfully finalized and is now accessible for sangat. This completion marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the facilities available to our community in 2023. A newly installed elevator provides convenient access from the basement to the top floor. This facility can be utilized for the Langar hall as well as Halls 5, 6, 7, and 8 in 2024.
