History
Sikhs began arriving in Texas in the 1960s and 1970s, initially as engineers in Houston's petrochemical and energy industry and as physicians at UT Health, Houston Methodist, and the Texas Medical Center — the world's largest medical complex. The 1970s oil boom accelerated Punjabi professional immigration to Houston. The community established one of the first Texas Gurdwaras in Houston in the 1980s. Dallas and Austin communities developed from the 1990s onward as Texas diversified economically. Notably, Sandeep Dhaliwal became the first Deputy Sheriff in Texas to wear a turban on duty in 2015, serving Harris County before his tragic death in the line of duty in 2019.
