About Sikh Foundation of Virginia

The Sikh Foundation of Virginia (SFV) Gurdwara Sahib, established in 1978, holds the distinction of being the first Gurdwara in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its founding was driven by the need of a growing Sikh community in Northern Virginia for a central place of worship, cultural gathering, and social connection. The current Gurdwara Sahib building was inaugurated on Baisakhi day in 1989, after the organization purchased five acres of land in 1981 and underwent several years of planning and construction. SFV offers a range of services to cater to the religious, spiritual, and cultural needs of its congregants. Regular services include Sunday Asa di War and evening Diwans on Thursdays, featuring Kirtan, Ardas, and Hukamnama. The Gurdwara Sahib premises are generally open daily from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM. Unique features include accommodations for Akhand Paths and the provision of Langar, a free vegetarian community meal served by volunteers to all visitors, regardless of background, embodying the Sikh principle of equality. Beyond regular worship, SFV provides educational programs through its Gurmat School, which teaches Punjabi language, Sikh history, beliefs, and practices to students aged 6-18. Kirtan classes are also offered, teaching various musical instruments. The premises can be reserved for special events such as weddings and anniversaries, with all religious functions conducted in accordance with the Sikh Rehat Meryada. The Gurdwara has undergone renovations and upgrades to accommodate the growing congregation, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to serving the community.

History

The Sikh Foundation of Virginia was founded in 1978. At that time, there was no Gurdwara in Virginia, and families used to go to either the Gurdwara on Military Road in Washington, DC, or the Guru Nanak Foundation of America, Silver Spring, Maryland. When the number of families in Northern Virginia reached a critical mass, about a dozen like-minded Punjabi families explored the idea of building a gurdwara in Northern Virginia to meet the religious, cultural and social needs of their community. The first meeting was held in Fairfax County Library in Fairfax City in 1978. An Ad hoc Committee was formed and tasked with writing the Constitution and Bylaws of a religious non-profit organization, and looking for a property to build the gurdwara. Over the next three years, the Committee launched a membership drive, selected and registered the name of the organization as Sikh Foundation of Virginia, and approved its Constitution and Bylaws. The organization purchased five-acres of land in 1981. The groundbreaking for the building was held in 1987, and the present Gurdwara Sahib was inaugurated on Baisakhi day in 1989. The organization purchased a five acre piece of land in 1981, but design, permits, and fundraising took another 5-6 years. In the meantime, the community started holding kirtan diwan and langar on Sundays at various members’ houses. The groundbreaking for the building was held in 1987, and the present Gurdwara Sahib was inaugurated on Baisakhi day in 1989. Since then, the Sikh Foundation of Virginia Gurdwara Sahib has been serving the community by holding regular diwans, and catering to various religious, spiritual, and cultural needs of the community. Over time, to keep up with the growth of the congregation and its concomitant demands, the original building has been renovated and upgraded by enlarging stairs, expanding kitchen, adding lobby/ patio/Porch, and building an additional room upstairs for Akhand Paths.
