History
Sikhs began arriving in Northern Virginia in the 1970s and 1980s as federal contractors, IT professionals, and researchers drawn by the growing defense and technology industry around Washington, DC. The community expanded substantially through the 1990s and 2000s as Northern Virginia became the center of America's internet economy — headquarters to AOL, Carlyle Group, General Dynamics, and the global internet's data center hub in Loudoun County. The community established its first Gurdwara in the Sterling area in the 1980s and grew to multiple Gurdwaras as the Sikh population surged.
