About Gurdwara Akaljot Sahib -Whitehorse -YT , ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਕਾਲਜੋਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ - ਵਾਇਟਹੋਰਸ - ਯੂਕੋਨ

Guru Nanak Sikh Organization of Yukon, also known as Gurudwara Akaljot Sahib, is more than a place of worship; it serves as a vital community center offering a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, and a place of refuge. Established to commemorate important Sikh festivals and foster community, the organization has a rich history in the Yukon dating back to 1906. Its mission includes following the teachings of the ten Gurus, helping those in need, providing spiritual guidance, and promoting Sikh culture and brotherhood. Services offered encompass daily morning and evening prayers, Kirtan on Sundays, and regular Langar (communal kitchen) serving meals every evening and on Sundays. The Gurudwara provides short-term housing for nine individuals in need at no cost. Unique features include programs promoting a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle through sporting activities for children, and volunteer opportunities such as spring clean-ups. The organization is actively involved in poverty alleviation through its Langar and donations to the Whitehorse Food Bank, and assists with mental health through meditation and spiritual guidance. They also offer Gurbani and Kirtan lessons. The vision for the future includes expanding the Darbar Sahib, increasing shelter capacity, and enlarging the kitchen and Langar hall.

History

Guru Nanak Sikh Organization of Yukon was established in 1988, to commemorate important Sikh festivals, like Gurpurabs and Vaisakhi. Until Summer of 2020 the Sikh festivals were celebrated at people’s homes, or community halls. In August 2020, a group of local Sikhs, took the initiative and drove over 6000 kms to bring saroop of Shri Guru Granth Sahib from Vancouver, BC back to Whitehorse, with full maryada and parkash was done at a rented space. A strong desire has been felt for a long time for having a permanent Gurudwara and a community center for Sikhs living in Yukon and for the future generations of Sikhs and young families moving to Yukon. The members of the Sikh community completed the purchase of about 1.5 acre property including the building across from the Whitehorse International Airport in September 2021.
