About Sikh Gurdwara of Richmond
**Richmond Sikh Gurdwara** Nestled on a serene 33-acre wooded lot in Richmond, Virginia, the Richmond Sikh Gurdwara serves as a spiritual center for the Sikh community and welcomes all faiths. Its history traces back to monthly services held in community centers, evolving into the formal organization Sikh Association of Central Virginia (SACVI) in 1984. Construction of the current building commenced in 2000, culminating in its completion in 2002. The Gurdwara offers a range of services, including daily prayer services, weekly Sunday programs featuring Keertan (hymn singing), Ardaas (common prayer), Katha (discourses), and a Langar (community kitchen) serving free meals to all. It also hosts a full-time Keertan Jatha comprising Bhai Harjinder Singh Raagi, Bhai Harmanpreet Singh, and Bhai Dasmesh Singh. Educational programs such as the SACVI Gurmat Camp and the Punjabi School of Richmond (PSOR) are available. A unique feature of the Gurdwara is its tranquil setting and the dedicated Keertan Jatha. In 2007, a residence for the Granthi was added to the premises. The Gurdwara actively engages with its community, marked by events like the annual Punjabi Mela. Adhering to Sikh protocols, visitors are welcomed to remove their shoes and cover their heads as a sign of respect.

History
Initially Sikh services were held once a month in various community centers under the leadership of the late Col. Surjit Singh Bawa. In 1984, the community decided to form a formal organization – the Sikh Association of Central Virginia. As more people moved to the area, a plot of land was purchased in Chesterfield county, next to Richmond. The community then raised money for the Gurdwara. Construction of the present building started in 2000 and was completed in May of 2002. Bhai Kuljit Singh Ji joined as our Granthi in 2003. Bhai Harjinder Singh ji and Jatha, who joined SACVI in 2025, are the Gurdwara’s current Granthis.
Unique Features
The Gurdwara has a full time Keertan Jatha of Bhai Harjinder Singh Raagi, Bhai Harmanpreet Singh and Bhai Dasmesh Singh. Visitors are welcome at any time during the day. Regular services are conducted on Sundays followed by a community kitchen, the Langar. In 2007, a residence for the Gurdwara Granthi was constructed on the premises.
