About Gurudwara Sahib Singh Sabha Milpitas

**Gurdwara Singh Sabha Milpitas (Bay Area)** Gurdwara Singh Sabha Milpitas, located in the Bay Area, serves as a spiritual center for the Sikh community. A Gurdwara, meaning "gateway to the Guru," is a Sikh place of worship where scriptures are recited, sermons are delivered, and congregational ceremonies for significant life events such as births, marriages, and deaths are observed. This Gurdwara welcomes people of all faiths. The Gurdwara offers daily prayer services, including morning 'Parkash' and 'Hukamnama' readings, followed by 'Kirtan' and 'Ardas'. Evening services include 'Nitnem Rehras Sahib', 'Kirtan', and 'Sohila Sahib'. Special programs like 'Weekly Samagam' on Saturdays and 'Gurmat Samagam' are also held. Central to Sikh practice is the 'Sikh Rehat Maryada', a code of conduct that emphasizes faith in one God, the ten Gurus, and the Guru Granth Sahib, along with living by the Guru's teachings and engaging in selfless service ('Seva'). The Gurdwara embodies this by providing a 'Darbar Sahib' for worship and a 'Langar' where free meals are served to all, fostering equality and community. The Gurdwara may also function as a resource for learning, evidenced by information on 'Sikhi' and its practices. A distinctive feature of Gurdwaras is the tall flagpole bearing the 'Nishan Sahib' (Sikh flag).

History

Gurdwara (the door or the gateway to the Guru) is the name given to the Sikh’s place of worship, commonly addressed as Sikh temple in the western world. The Sikh scriptures are recited or sung and sermons are delivered. Guru Granth Sahib is placed on high palanquin under a canopy in the middle of one end of the hall. As well as sermons and the singing of the scriptures, the congregation is expected to participate in the ceremonies of birth, baptism, marriage, death and celebration of festivals.Gurdwara meaning the gate way to the Guru, is the best palce of worship for Sikhs, however, people of all faiths are welcomed in the Sikh Gurdwara. The Gurdwara has a Darbar Sahib where the Guru Granth Sahib is seen and a Langar where people can eat free food served by the Sikhs Community. A gurdwara may also be a library, nursery and classromm. A Gurdwara can be identified from a distance by tall flagpoles bearing the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh Flag. Any place where the Guru Granth Sahib is installed and treated with due respect according to Sikh Rehat Maryada (the Sikh code of conduct and convention) can be referred to as a gurdwara, whether it is a room in one’s own house or a separate building.

Unique Features

The visual identity of Sikh men, characterized by their turbans (dastaars) and beards, serves as a symbol of their commitment to Sikhism’s core values. Unfortunately, these distinct features can sometimes lead to misperceptions and, in some cases, discrimination. Increasing awareness and understanding of Sikhism is vital to fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society. Sikh Americans have long championed education and outreach to bridge these gaps, striving to create a more informed and empathetic nation.
