About Sikh Gurdwara San Jose
Sikh Gurdwara Sahib - San Jose, established in 1984, serves as a significant religious and community hub for the Sikh population in the South Bay Area. Founded by dedicated community members including Late Jit Singh Bainiwal, Late Pyra Singh Obhi, and Teja Singh, the Gurdwara has a history of growth and commitment to its congregation. Initially operating from rented spaces, it has since acquired land and constructed its present facilities through community support and personal loans. The Gurdwara offers a range of services, including daily and weekly religious services, and facilities for booking religious ceremonies such as Weddings, Akhand Paths, and Sukhmani Paths. A unique feature is its extensive Langar (Community Kitchen), which serves daily meals to around 1,000 people on weekdays and over 7,500 on weekends, with significantly larger numbers for major festivals. Beyond religious services, Sikh Gurdwara Sahib - San Jose plays a vital community role through initiatives like the Guru Nanak Khalsa School, one of the largest Sikh children's education programs in the U.S., and the Guru Nanak Medical Clinic, providing volunteer-led healthcare consulting to the uninsured. It also offers scholarships for Sikh students pursuing higher education. The Gurdwara emphasizes transparency in its operations, with financial statements and policies readily available. Unique features include live audio and video streaming of programs and a dedicated COVID-19 response that included online program broadcasting, financial assistance to laid-off employees, and overseas support with oxygen concentrators during the pandemic.

History
The South Bay Sikh Community was growing rapidly in the early 1980s, necessitating the establishment of a Gurdwara. Initially, the Gurdwara rented space in an East Bay Community Center. In 1986, a small building was purchased in East San Jose, but it soon proved too small for the congregation. In 1990, the Gurdwara Committee acquired its first parcel of land at Quimby Road, followed by two adjacent parcels, totaling about 5 acres. Due to city and county requirements, building a Gurdwara at this site was deemed too expensive. In 1996, the Committee decided to purchase 40 acres of land near the East San Jose Foothills, requiring approximately $10 million for construction. With generous donations and loans from the Sangat, construction began in 1999. Phase 1 was completed in August 2004, and Phase 2 was finished in April 2011 at a cost of $20 million.
Unique Features
The Gurdwara is one of the largest Sikh temples in the United States with an annual income exceeding $2.5 million. It follows generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and has its financial statements audited by an external independent CPA firm. The Gurdwara is open 7 days a week, with religious services in the morning and evening. On Sundays, programs run from 4 AM to 9 PM, with an average weekly attendance exceeding 10,000 people. They also have a solar system purchased in 2017.
