About Guru Nanak Darbar Inc

Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. (GND) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been serving the community as a non-profit religious charity and Sikh cultural center since 1994. Housed in a 14,400 sq. ft. building, GND is dedicated to preaching and promoting the Sikh religion and fostering an inclusive environment for its practice. The Gurudwara offers a range of services including daily religious programs such as Parkash, Nitnem, Ardaas, Kirtan, and Katha, with distinct schedules for weekdays and Sundays. Special services like Akhand Path Sahib and Sehaj Path Sahib are available, the former being a continuous recital of the Guru Granth Sahib over 48 hours, often held on weekends. The Gurudwara also conducts Sukhmani Sahib readings, Anand Karaj (Sikh marriage ceremonies), and provides Langer Sewa, a community kitchen serving vegetarian meals to all without discrimination. A unique feature of GND is its commitment to education and community engagement. The organization endeavors to connect the younger generation to their Sikh roots through Punjabi and Kirtan/Tabla classes, and a week-long summer Gurmat Camp. Classes

Gurmat Camp

GND’s organizes a week long Gurmat Camp in the summer to keep the kids connected to the Gurmat values.  It’s a week long camp that aims to inspire kids to connect to the teaching of the Guru and to help our youth identify their roots. Gurmat Camp allow young Sikh children to continue growing emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Children enjoy the opportunity to spend fun-filled days with other children as they learn about Sikh History, Gurmat, gurmukhi and discipline. During the Camp Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks are provided.

Langer

The Langer or the Community Kitchen where vegetarian meal is free and served to all without any discrimination of caste, colour, religion, gender or any social status. In langer sangat (people) would sit on the floor in the pangat (lines or rows) to share and enjoy the food together. Each week a family and group of families volutneer to provide and prepare the meal for several hundred peoples who visit the Gurudwara Sahib or in need.

Anand Kaaraj

Marriage is wonderful and joyous occasion for both the groom, the bride, their respected families and invited guests. Anand Karaj is the Sikh marriage ceremony performed in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib for holy union of bride and groom.The Laava or four stanzas, are read and then sung during the ceremony to formalize and sanctify the marriage. Each Lavan gives the teaching to the couple how they can help each other to make the marriage a success.

Sukhmani Sahib & Kirtan

The Sukhmani Sahib is the simplest and the most popular of all the Banis in the Guru Granth Sahib. “Sukhmani” means something which gives peace of mind or the touchstones for happiness. Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s aim in writing the Sukhmani  (The Psalm of Peace) was that the reader may feel composure of mind and a sense of inner bliss. Any person who is fed up with life or depressed by anxiety or otherwise afflicted will derive real consolation from it.

Sehaj Path Sahib

Sehaj path is the reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from beginning to end, with no time-limit for completion. One may read any number of pages on a single day and the next few pages the next day or even at a longer interval. A Paath may be fulfilled by one or more readers, and the pace depends entirely on those reading. Fulfilling the Paath can be done in honor of a particular occasion or simply to increase one’s feeling of connection to the Guru.

Akhand Path Sewa

Akhand Path Sahib is non-stop, continuous recital of the Guru Granth Sahib from beginning to end. Such a recital must be completed within 48 hours. The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is 1430 large pages, and is read through day and night  in a continuous reading. Akhand Path Services at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, most commonly take place on the weekend, with them starting on Friday morning and concluding on Sunday morning. During these three days, families listen to the path and take part in sewa at the Gurdwara Sahib.

Punjabi classes help us preserve Punjabi for generations to come and to keep our mother tongue alive. Kirtan/Tabla Classes

Kirtan/ Tabla classes focus not only on teaching students to learn how to play the harmonium or tabla and sing. Both these instruments are used to accompany the Kirtan during religious services to play the raga (or tune) of the shabad. Our goal is to connect the youth with Gurbani at a much deeper level by incorporating all aspects of Kirtan and Gurbani and an understanding of Guru Sahib’s teachings. The Kirtan classes incorporate all aspects of Kirtan and Gurbani to allow students to experience Guru Sahib’s teachings at a much deeper level.

Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. (GND) is a non-profit religious charity organization that has been serving the community since 1994. GND is a Sikh cultural centre that provides the public with many opportunities in its 14,400 sq. ft. building located at 900 McLeod Avenue (Honorary Guru Nanak way), Winnipeg, Manitoba. GND offers many religious services and always has its doors open to everyone.

Unique Features

Celebrates Sikh religious festivals every year to bring joy and to preserve the Sikh religion including its Khalsa traditions, culture, and customs. Teaching the main values of Sikhism: (Naam Japo, Kirt Karo, Vand Shako) is also a big part of our mission because all Sikhs should live by these values.
