About Gurudwara Winnipeg South Sikh Centre

Winnipeg South Sikh Centre, established over thirty years ago to serve the growing Sikh community in South Winnipeg, is a vibrant religious and charitable organization located at 1248 Wilkes Ave. What began as a need for a more accessible place of worship has evolved into a substantial facility with a main block dedicated to the Gurudwara, alongside separate areas for Punjabi and Kirtan classes, and proposed indoor physical activities for children. The Centre offers a range of services and activities designed to foster spiritual growth and community engagement. These include daily prayers, regular Kirtan (devotional singing) sessions on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, and special programs on occasions and Gurupurabs. A cornerstone of the Centre's offerings is the Langar, the free community kitchen, which upholds the Sikh principle of equality and serves meals to all visitors. Educational programs are also central, with Punjabi and Gurmat classes held every Sunday for children, and Kirtan classes offering tabla and harmonium training. The Centre also promotes healthy lifestyles through seminars on chronic diseases and flu clinics. A unique feature of Winnipeg South Sikh Centre is its commitment to serving all who seek spiritual enlightenment, welcoming visitors of all backgrounds. The Gurudwara Sahib is a two-story building equipped with amenities such as free parking, handicap access, and elevators. For services, projector screens display English translations of prayers, and digital information displays provide the daily Hukam Nama. The Centre also houses a library named after one of its founders, S. Partap Singh Panghura, offering a collection of books for the community. The Centre's mission is to provide a supportive environment for the Sikh community and to promote Sikhism while fostering strong local community relations, working towards a world where Sikhs can freely practice their faith.

History

Winnipeg South Sikh Centre came into existence about thirty years back when few Sikh families realized that Gurudwara Sahib in the north was too far from their residence and hence, it was getting hard to commute every day. A piece of land was bought by these families at 500 Dover court. As time passed, the number of devotees outgrown what the space building at 500 Dover court could accommodate. Therefore, the decision to buy three Acres at 1248 Wilkes Ave (Sikh centre way) was made. A Beautiful and elegant building with about 20000 Sq. feet area was built.

Unique Features

The main block is dedicated for Gurudwara while other smaller blocks are for Punjabi Classes, Kirtan classes and one for proposed indoor physical activities for kids. Projector screens display English translation of prayers. Digital Information LCD display in the lobby. Benches and chairs provided for the handicapped.
