About Sikh Dharma of New Mexico

Hacienda de Guru Ram Das (HGRD) is recognized as the Mother Ashram of Sikh Dharma in the Western Hemisphere, founded by Yogi Bhajan in 1970. Nestled in Northern New Mexico, it serves as a vibrant spiritual community that welcomes all faiths, fostering spiritual growth and unity. HGRD offers a range of services including daily Sadhana, evening meditations, and regular Gurdwara services, complete with Langar (community kitchen). Special events like Akhand Paths are a continuous tradition, with virtual options available. The history of HGRD is rich, originating in Santa Fe in 1971 before relocating to Española. It has evolved into a substantial community focused on service (seva), a core value reflecting the teachings of Guru Ram Das. The ashram is characterized by its significant gold-domed Gurdwara, Siri Singhasan e Khalsa, a landmark visible from surrounding hills. HGRD also serves as an administrative hub for various 3HO outreach organizations, including the International Kundalini Yoga Teachers Association (IKYTA) and the Kundalini Research Institute (KRI). The community actively participates in initiatives such as "Food-for-Kids NM," demonstrating a deep commitment to serving humanity and promoting a healthy, happy, and holy way of life.

History

Hacienda de Guru Ram Das, named by Yogi Bhajan (aka the Siri Singh Sahib) as the Mother Ashram of Sikh Dharma in the Western hemisphere, promotes spiritual growth and individual, community, and universal unity and healing. The ashram was founded by Yogi Bhajan in 1970. The name Hacienda de Guru Ram Das "home of the wisdom of service to all," reflects the merging of the local Hispanic culture with the Sikh teachings embodied in a 16th century saint from India, known as Guru Ram Das, the Guru of Miracles. His teachings of service with humility emanate throughout the community. Seva (selfless service) is a high priority in our lifestyle and every aspect of our community revolves around the selfless service of its sangat (congregation) members.
